Grieve: Priscilla role's my destiny
Richard Grieve has revealed he is delighted to finally be starring on stage in Priscilla Queen of the Desert - The Musical after Jason Donovan originally pipped him to the post.
The former star of Neighbours, Home and Away and Emmerdale has just joined the cast as single father Tic in the show in London's West End, and while he admits the make-up, costumes and dancing are hard work, he's happy to be in the show.
Richard explained: "For me it had a very personal resonance, I have quite a history with it. I worked with the director many years ago back in Australia, he gave me a bit of a break after I'd been working in television. And I worked with the choreographer on my first professional job when I was about 19.
"Then when they were holding auditions for the first time in the UK I went along, and I did about seven call backs to the point where they made me up in drag and I was really thinking, 'This could come through'. But then they offered it to Jason Donovan.
"So I was always thinking when Jason leaves the production that might be my turn then. Then Ben Richards was offered the role and I found myself thinking, 'Is it ever going to happen for me, am I ever going to play that part?'
"And then I was offered it this time. Third time lucky. So by then I was just raring to go."
Priscilla is showing at London's Palace Theatre until 7 January 2012 and another production has just opened on Broadway. For more information visit www.priscillathemusical.com
