Griffith ‘questioned marriage before divorce’
Melanie Griffith seemed to question her marriage in the weeks before filing for divorce.
It was reported by TMZ on Friday that the Oscar winner had filed divorce papers wishing to end her 18-year marriage to fellow actor Antonio Banderas. In the documents filed by power attorney Laura Wasser, the 56-year-old cited irreconcilable differences. And it seems that Melanie had been pondering about marriage for some time as a question she posed on her Twitter account last month has now surfaced in the media.
“Who believes in marriage and why? Or why not?” she tweeted to her followers.
The Working Girl star received a flurry of replies from her fans. The ones she chose to retweet may have foreshadowed Friday’s announcement.
“I think marriage has become, by celebrities, an accessory,” one message read. “It also keeps them in the press. It has lost its meaning.”
Melanie met the 53-year-old Shrek actor on the set of 1995 film Two Much. Antonio was married to his first wife at the time but after beginning a relationship with Melanie, it ended in divorce and the pair married a month later in London, England.
But it seems the split is an amicable one if their official statement is anything to go by.
“We have thoughtfully and consensually decided to finalise our almost twenty years marriage in a loving and friendly manner honouring and respecting each other, our family and friends and the beautiful time we have spent together,” a spokesman for the couple announced.
This will be Melanie’s fourth divorce, having been married twice to actor Don Johnson and also to fellow actor Steve Bauer.
