Halle Berry’s new role is ‘complicated’
Halle Berry plays a “complicated woman with a complicated family” in her new sci-fi series.
Halle, dressed as her Extant character Molly Woods, is featured on the cover of Entertainment Weekly’s July 4 issue. The Academy Award-winning actress’s salary is more than $100,000 an episode, and she will be credited as a co-executive producer in the upcoming CBS sci-fi series, which airs July 9.
“The minute I started to read it, I couldn’t put it down,” the 47-year-old actress told EW about the show's script. “I thought, ‘Wow. This is different.’ It’s innovative. Molly is a strong female character, which I really love to play. Molly is a complicated woman with a complicated family.”
Halle plays an astronaut who returns home from a solo space journey, but when she comes back she is pregnant.
The 13-episode series also stars Goran Visnjic and Camryn Manheim. Steven Spielberg is an executive producer for the show through Amblin Television.
“I remember walking on the stage and someone going, ‘Oh, Steven is here by the way,’” Goran, who plays Molly’s husband John, told EW. “I was like, ‘Really? Is my hair okay?’”
The prep work for Halle’s character was very cosmic. She did “astronaut stuff”, including a zero-gravity flight, talking with astronauts and visiting NASA, she previously told Variety.
Halle has ample experience in the sci-fi arena, as she has starred in films like X-Men as mutant Storm. However, returning to television was a challenge for the star, as her last major role was in 2005 telefilm Their Eyes Were Watching God.
“[TV] just goes at a faster pace. We shoot like six to eight pages of dialogue a day, where in film you’re lucky if you do one or two,” Halle explained. “So the pace, I think, is the hardest part for me to sort of catch up to.”
