Anne Hathaway got her hair chopped off on camera while filming Les Miserables.
The actress plays factory worker-turned-prostitute Fantine in the forthcoming movie musical adaptation of the 1862 Victor Hugo novel.
The 30-year-old star famously cut her long locks into a short pixie style while filming.
But before it was coiffed and styled into a trendy look, she had to have her prized mane hacked off by an actress on camera.
Nicola Sloane, credited as the "hair crone" in the movie, was tasked with the job.
"She is a wonderful actress but she is not a hairdresser," Anne told USA Today.
After cutting half her hair, stylist Paul Gooch dressed in costume for cutaways to finish the job.
Despite having to deliver a gut-wrenching performance during the scene, Anne recalled how he helped her to relax.
"I was expecting it to be more painful and savage, but Paul is such a loving person, he was very gentle with me when he did it," she explained. "Even though it looks brutal onscreen, there is a gentleness to it which I actually thought was a stronger choice in the story," Anne added.
Les Miserables is directed by Oscar-winner Tom Hooper.
The film, co-starring Hugh Jackman and Amanda Seyfried, is scheduled for US release on Christmas Day.
