TV star Paul O'Grady's chat show is being investigated by the broadcasting watchdog after he inhaled helium on the programme.

The episode was broadcast on The Paul O'Grady Show on ITV before the watershed last month .

An Ofcom spokesman said: "Ofcom has opened an investigation into whether it was harmful for the presenter to demonstrate inhaling helium gas during this live pre-watershed show."

In March, Dame Helen Mirren sparked controversy when she inhaled helium on US programme The Tonight Show.

The 69-year-old actress took the balloon and chuckled: "I haven't done this since I was about 11. This is the rude bit - suck in - ooh."

Inhaling helium can prove fatal.

In February, a Japanese broadcaster apologised to the family of a 12-year-old singer who was put in a coma after inhaling helium for the TV show.
