Heroes is set to be revived for the small screen, four years after it was cancelled.

The show, about ordinary people who discover they have superpowers, launched the careers of stars such as Hayden Panettiere and Zachary Quinto before it was axed in 2010 after four seasons.

Executives at America's NBC network have confirmed they will be bringing the show back to life next year, with the revamped 13-episode series named Heroes Reborn, reported Deadline.

NBC's Jennifer Salke said: "The enormous impact Heroes had on the television landscape when it first launched in 2006 was eye-opening. Shows with that kind of resonance don't come around often and we thought it was time for another instalment."

It is expected to feature an all-new cast, although "we won't rule out the possibility of some of the show's original cast members popping back in", Jennifer added.

Masi Oka, who played space-time manipulator Hiro Nakamura, teased on Twitter: "Was watching the Olympics and saw the #HeroesReborn trailer. Time to dust off the sword?"

His co-star Milo Ventimiglia added: "Pretty big news. Congrats."

Heroes, which was created by Tim Kring, received a number of Emmy, Golden Globe and Bafta TV nominations during its four-year run.
