Hough apologises for blackface
Julianne Hough has apologised for dressing in blackface for Halloween.
The dancer-turned-actress donned a controversial costume to attend a Halloween party in Los Angeles on Friday night.
The 25-year-old wore dark make-up and an orange jumpsuit to get into character as Suzanne "Crazy Eyes" Warren, an inmate from the popular Netflix prison drama Orange is the New Black.
A storm of controversy ignited on social media when photos of the costume were released.
Julianne took to Twitter Saturday to address the disappointment with her decision.
"I am a huge fan of the show 'Orange is the New Black,' actress Uzo Aduba, and the character she has created. It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way," she wrote.
"I realize my costume hurt and offended people and I truly apologize."
Spokespersons for the show and for actress Uzo Aduba have not commented publicly on the costume.
Julianne, who is known for her wholesome image, recently raised eyebrows by revealing she hasn't always been a good girl.
The told Vulture.com earlier this month she's given a lap dance and "smoked a fattie". She also admitted to stealing as a kid.
"I did steal my sister's money," she confessed. "I think she had like $70 that she earned from being an extra on Touched by an Angel from when she was in Utah. I stole her money, and me and my friend went to the mall. I remember we went to Hot Topic and bought all the fake piercings, those magnetic piercings, and crop tops and, for some reason, silky underwear," she said.
