Howard didn’t think Empire would work

Terrence Howard initially thought Empire would fail.

The 46-year-old actor stars as Lucious Lyon in Fox drama Empire. The show has had record breaking ratings success, but Terrence admits he didn’t remotely expect it to be a hit.

“I read the script, and it's got Cookie and Luscious and what the hell is all of this? And my gay son? I didn't think it was going to work,” he told Access Hollywood Live on Monday. “I called my assistant [and said,] 'This is c**p. This ain't going to work.’”

Terrence was concerned about how the show would be filmed, as within the first ten minutes of the pilot there was a scene with two black men kissing.

“If I was 12 years old and my father came downstairs and saw me watching a TV show that had men kissing, I would have a life-long conversation with my daddy. I'd never be allowed to watch TV [again],” he continued.

He voiced his concerns to the network about the scene. But thankfully he signed up for the programme alongside Taraji P. Henson, who plays his ex-wife. Thankfully, Terrence was able to see how much times had changed, and is proud of the show.

“That's the environment I grew up in. That's the environment my friends grew up in. So this is a show aimed towards the black demographic. And do you really think that this is going to fly?" he said. "I called Fox. I was like, 'You need to take the kissing out, because this is going to stop, shut down the show.' I was so wrong! I didn't know how ready the world was to see the truth.”
