Hudgens on ‘finding true self’

Vanessa Hudgens admits it was challenging for her to express herself authentically in her teens.

The 25-year-old actress shot to stardom nearly a decade ago when her Disney movie High School Musical was released.

And Vanessa thinks teenage fame definitely had its pitfalls.

“Finding and being your true self [was hard then]. It takes so much energy to find-it’s easier to hide behind a mask,” she revealed in the Back To School/Distressed issue of Flaunt magazine. “I mean, I went through a period where I shopped at Hot Topic. I didn’t want guys to look at me. But it made things easier.”

Vanessa famously dated her High School Musical co-star Zac Efron for five years before the pair officially called it quits in 2010.

But Zac wasn’t her first boyfriend.

“Well, my first boyfriend was in sixth grade. At the time, you think it’s a big relationship but it’s the furthest thing from a relationship you can possibly imagine,” Vanessa recalled. “And there are certain rules, too. Like you can’t let them [your partner] break up with you-you have to break up with them.”

Vanessa is now known as one of the most attractive young women in entertainment.

Although the star is aware of the immense pressure to be beautiful amongst her Hollywood peers, she won’t allow this kind of mentality to restrict her diet.

“You only have one life, and there are just so many delicious things. Like chocolate. Wine,” she said.

Vanessa will next be seen in horror-comedy flick Kitchen Sink, which is due for release in 2015.
