Hugh Jackman: 'My wife is the best'
Hugh Jackman says his marriage to Deborra-Lee Furness gets better and better every year.
Actor Hugh Jackman praises his wife Deborra-Lee Furness as the best thing to ever happen to him.
The 47-year-old Hollywood star has been married to Deborra-Lee since 1996 and revealed his relationship is stronger than ever as they approach their 20th wedding anniversary. Hugh was appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which will air on Monday (01Feb16), and couldn’t help gushing about his other half.
“She's the greatest thing that ever happened to me and it gets better and better,” he explained to talk show host Ellen. “And I'm kind of really grateful that I met (her) before anything kind of happened because everything that's happened in my career and on screen, off screen - we've always done it together.”
Hugh, who is currently promoting his new movie Eddie the Eagle, recalled meeting his future wife on the set of TV show Corelli in 1995, with the pair going on to marry the following year. The star admits he was in awe of the blonde when he first set eyes on her and almost ruined any chance of a romantic relationship by ignoring her.
“That was my first job where I met her,” he smiled. “She was the star and I had this major crush on her. Everyone did. The whole crew had a crush on her and I was so embarrassed by that - I didn't talk to her for about a week.
“When I realised, I didn't talk to her. About a week later, I go, ‘This is silly.’ I had a dinner party and I invited her over and about 10 other people. And she said, ‘What's the matter, have I annoyed you? You're not talking to me anymore. What have I done wrong?’ All the sudden I was like - I had a couple - and I said, ‘Look, I got a crush on you. I'll get over it.’”
Deborra-Lee then confessed she had also fallen for Hugh, with the actor explaining they then began dating and quickly fell in love.
They celebrate 20 years of marriage in April (16), and the couple raise two children; 15-year-old Oscar and Ava, 10.
During the TV show appearance, Hugh also revealed he has been helping his son find a date, by offering autographs to teenagers Oscar takes a liking to.
“Am I a wingman for my son now? This is really weird,” Hugh laughed.
