Hugh Jackman: My wife was best friend from start

Hugh Jackman became good friends with his wife of 17 years, Deborra-Lee Furness, as soon as they met.

The Wolverine star married Deborra-Lee Furness 17 years ago and they have two children together.

The actors were good pals from the start, which led to a wonderful romance.

"From day one, we were best mates," he told Good Housekeeping magazine. "We just clicked. We were giggling and laughing - we just connected."

The thespian is in awe of her high energy and enthusiasm for motherhood.

They both work hard to support their family but Hugh thinks she is particularly good at handling her responsibilities.

"Deb is the last one to bed and the first one up in the morning. You know those dolls that, when you lie them down, their eyes close? And as soon as they're vertical, their eyes open? That's Deb," he joked. "It's almost annoying. She has two speeds: Stop and Go. She is always, 'Let's do this, let's do that.' And she is very funny, very quick."

Although the Australians make their jet-setting lifestyle work, he admits there have been some bumps in the road.

The 44-year-old father to son Oscar, 13, and Ava, eight, admits he thought their busy lifestyles would spell doom for their relationship initially.

"When I'd met her, she'd already done about 20 movies," he admitted. "She said, 'It's not that I think you're going to go off with a co-star, or vice versa. But people get used to living apart. You get used to handling a problem yourself.'”

Hugh credits fantastic communication with making their marriage so solid.

He appreciates the conversations he has with his wife.

"We talk about everything all the time,” Hugh said. “The bedrock of any relationship is to communicate, and Deb and I have always done that, discussing whatever's going on, good or bad."
