Judge Rinder has revealed he quit acting because Benedict Cumberbatch was so much better than him.

The television star - who is not a real judge, but barrister Robert Rinder - tried to break into the industry while he was a student.

But he told the Radio Times he was put off when he and a young Cumberbatch were pitted against each other at an audition and he saw the calibre of his competition.

He said: "I though I'd done well, and then I saw him deliver exactly the same lines and it was so different.

"He had a fizz, a chemistry and an understanding of the text that you just knew was what the writer wanted it to sound like."

Rinder gave up on the stage but went on to become friends with Cumberbatch, who got ordained to officiate at his wedding in Ibiza in 2013.

Rinder was then one of the Sherlock star's three best men when he married Sophie Hunter last year.

Rinder, 42, went on to a law career and in 2014 he landed his ITV reality courtroom series, Judge Rinder.

He now has a new programme, Judge Rinder's Crime Stories, which will see him focus on true life crime.

Rinder said: "The public want to understand real cases, to come to a conclusion themselves. They're perfectly capable. That's why we have juries.

"Crime drama is popular, but people want authenticity above all else these days."
