Jada Pinkett Smith: 'I thought I'd be a single mother'
Will Smith credited tequila and a Mexican vacation for having children with wife Jada Pinkett Smith as he honoured her in a sweet speech at VH1's Dear Mama event
Jada Pinkett Smith never thought she would be lucky enough to be part of a family.
The 44-year-old actress is mother to 17-year-old Jaden and 15-year-old Willow with husband Will Smith, as well as being stepmother to the actor's 23-year-old son Trey.
But as she spoke at the VH1 Dear Mama event in New York on Tuesday night (03May16), Jada admitted her own upbringing had made her believe she would never be lucky enough to be part of a unit like she is now.
"I never thought about being married or having a family. I didn't know anything about that because I came from a single mom so I always though I'd be a single mom and have a career," Jada said. "But then I found this beautiful man, Will. I got married to him and I got my bonus son Trey and then I got Jaden and I got Willow and I was able to create, for myself, something I never had – which means family."
Will also took to the stage to pay tribute to his spouse. While his speech was touching at points, it also included some of the actor's trademark humour as he joked about how he and Jada conceived their children.
"I'm not gonna be silly. I'm here to honour you," Will said. "Just watching the piece with the kids it just takes me back to when we made them. Can't help but think about that. It's just amazing. It's like you take Jada Pinkett Smith and an obscure town in Mexico and some tequila and you end up with great kids!"
However, after embarrassing his children, who were in the audience, Will continued to reveal just what it is that he loves about his wife.
"Jada is magical," he added. "Part of why I love her is things happen in a way they shouldn't happen, they shouldn't go that way. She has this magical power."
Jada and Will celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary next year (17).
