Jada Pinkett Smith is crazy about comics

Jada Pinkett Smith gets to explore her dark side by playing a baddie in Gotham.

Thanks to big-screen adaptations of well-loved graphic novels, the genre has never been more popular.

In TV show Gotham, which tells the story behind Commissioner James Gordon's rise to prominence in Gotham City in the years before Batman's arrival, Jada plays Fish Mooney. The character was thought up for the show, meaning she is a new addition to the DC Comic universe.

“It's cool [playing a new character]! It gives me an opportunity to participate in creating something that may become part of the comic book canon,” Jada smiled to People magazine.

“[Playing a villain means] I get to be so outside of myself. It gives me an opportunity to really explore my dark side.”

This isn’t Jada’s first foray into the world of comics; she’s actually previously penned her own stories.

Plus, husband Will Smith is set to star in comic adaptation Suicide Squad as Deadshot, alongside Margot Robbie, Jared Leto and Cara Delevingne.

“In my 20s I actually wrote a comic book about a black female. I would love to get it made [into a movie],” Jada enthused.

Jada and Will have been married for over 17 years and have children Jaden and Willow together.

However, Will recently admitted that finding a healthy work-life balance hasn’t always been easy.

“Jada and I have struggled with that a little bit,” he confessed to Us Weekly. “The problem is one person is in work mode while the other person is in chill mode. Then it's like you're both trying to come up."
