James Corden’s Drop the Mic segment gets spin-off
James Corden's rap battle concept Drop the Mic is being made into a 16-episode series by TBS.
The Late Late Show with James Corden’s rap battle segment Drop the Mic is being adapted into a standalone TV series.
U.S. network TBS has announced that it has ordered a 16-episode first season of Drop the Mic, the comedic music competition, inspired by James and Ben Winston's popular sketch on their CBS late-night show. Kevin Hart, Anne Hathaway, David Schwimmer and Rebel Wilson are among the stars who’ve previously participated in the segment.
Drop the Mic will pit four celebrities against each other in a rap battle, with each week’s winner to be chosen by the studio audience. A host for the new show is yet to be confirmed.
The series will be executive produced by James, Ben and Jensen Karp, a former battle rapper formerly known as Hot Karl.
"Drop the Mic is such an exciting show, and we can't wait to begin making it," Ben said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "Every time we have done this segment on The Late Late Show, it has become a massive viral moment. Now with TBS as our perfect partner, we hope to create some really memorable television."
Drop the Mic has been one of the highlights of the British host’s late night series, as has the massively popular Carpool Karaoke, which is also being made into a series by Apple TV.
Recently, Spike TV has garnered ratings and viral video success with Lip Sync Battle, which started as a regular bit on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
The series marks TBS’ first new unscripted show since Michael Bloom took charge of overseeing special event programming, and he’s looking forward to the series kicking off.
"James Corden and Ben Winston have struck a nerve with their celebrity-driven, music-infused, incredibly fun content," Michael explained. "This series embodies the kind of unique and surprising programming we are looking for as we reinvent our approach to this genre within the new TBS brand."
A start date for the new Drop the Mic will be announced at a later date.
