James Gandolfini’s body back in US

James Gandolfini's body will remain at a funeral home until he is laid to rest on Thursday.

The Sopranos actor passed away after suffering a heart attack while on holiday with his 13-year-old son Michael in Rome last week. He was 51 when he died and last week his family announced they were working with Italian authorities to ensure his body could be brought home quickly.

According to TMZ, it was flown into Newark, New Jersey, via private jet this morning. It was then transferred to a funeral home, where it will stay until he is laid to rest on Thursday.

It's been confirmed the service will be held at the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine in New York City.

James' family announced the funeral will take place at 10am in a statement.

As well as spending time with his son while in Italy, the late actor was due to appear at 59th Taormina Film Festival on Saturday. The event paid tribute to James over the weekend.

The star had issues with alcohol and drugs during his life, although neither played a part in his death. On Friday, family friend Michael Kobold read a statement from the star's loved ones which included the autopsy results.

They showed the actor passed away of natural causes, having suffered a heart attack.

"The autopsy further states that nothing else was found in his system," Michael added. "We are all devastated by his loss. James was a devoted husband, a loving father of two children and a brother and cousin you could always count on. We thank you for giving us the privacy you have afforded us at this difficult time.”

A report that James had enjoyed eight alcoholic drinks with dinner shortly before his death was also dismissed during the press conference.
