Jamie Dornan described having to continue work on the Fifty Shades of Grey sequels the day after the Bastille Day terrorist attack as a "b**ody awful situation".

Jamie Dornan had a "contractual obligation" to continue working on the Fifty Shades of Grey sequels in Nice, France, the day after the terrorist attack there.

The 34-year-old actor stars as Christian Grey in the movie franchise based on the popular book series, and was filming scenes for the sequels Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed in the capital of the French Riviera last month (Jul16).

On 14 July (16), Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel ploughed the lorry he was driving into a crowd celebrating the Bastille Day holiday, killing 84 people in a terrorist attack.

While Jamie and co-star Dakota Johnson were safe and not involved in the tragic incident, they had to return to work the next day - something the Northern Irish actor was less than happy about.

"It was, as you can imagine, a b**ody awful situation. You'd be affected by it wherever you were in the world," he told Coming Soon.

"The first thing that everyone has to work out was is everybody safe, is the whole crew and cast safe. Then you have the strange thing of the next day still trying to make this movie that's costing millions of dollars to put together.

"There's this contractual obligation to work the next day, which is a very strange environment to work in."

Jamie also revealed that while many of his castmates and crew members were staying in Monaco, he and wife Amelia Warner made the decision to stay in Nice during filming, along with their two children.

"Most of the cast and crew were actually staying in Monaco so there's a little bit of distance there, but my family and I wanted a little bit more space so we were actually staying in Nice," he said.

After news broke of the horrific attack, the movie's producer Dana Brunetti used his social media to confirm everyone involved in the Fifty Shades filming was safe.

"As far as I know everyone from our cast and crew is safe. Thanks for everyone's concern," he tweeted. "Back safe in my hotel room. Thanks for everyone's concern and messages."
