Jason Clarke: People love my Aussie aggression!
Jason Clarke loves the twinkle in Sir Ian McKellen's eye.
(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Jason Clarke has a sneaking suspicion cinema audiences like his Australian aggression.
The actor hails from Down Under, but Hollywood has taken him under its wing recently with blockbusters like Dawn of the Planet of Apes and Terminator Genisys.
The 46-year-old follows in the footsteps of fellow rugged Aussie stars Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman, and admits his countrymen possess a certain spark.
"Funny isn't it? I think it's more a look that you've got something behind the eyes - something to delve into," Jason laughed to British newspaper Metro.
"A lot of younger American actors have been doing this since they were eight. They haven't been out there getting experience and heartache. Australians are very aggressive. Maybe cinemagoers like aggressive men."
Jason also thinks the English have that elusive behind-the-eye quality, with one Brit particularly standing out.
"I love Ian McKellen. I love a dude that's working at 76 and still got that twinkle in his eye," he gushed.
Next up for Jason is mountaineering drama Everest, which hits UK cinemas this Friday before heading to America next week.
It's based on the real-life tragedy that occurred on the world's highest peak, and Jason jumped at the chance to take over from Christian Bale when the actor had to drop out.
"I wanted Everest desperately. I remember when the story broke in 1996. I was in my first year out of drama school and doing Shakespeare's The Tempest in Sydney with Cate Blanchett and Geoffrey Rush. We were all hooked listening to news about how there was this guy stuck up at the top of Everest at 29,000 feet and they can't get him down and he's ringing his wife," he recalled.
