Jason Derülo's grandmother's wish before she dies is to see him marry his girlfriend Jordin Sparks.

The 23-year-old singer fractured a vertebra in his neck while practising an energetic dance routine last year, causing a life-threatening injury.

Jason had to wear a brace for seven months after causing the damage and has joked many people complimented him on his new accessory.

"I remember a few people coming up to me going, 'Man, I like that neckpiece,' and I'm like, 'Dude, I broke my neck!' and they were like, 'What!'" he laughed in an interview with Access Hollywood.

Jason's girlfriend Jordin Sparks helped him through the recovery process and he has gushed about her constant love and support.

The star insists marriage is on the cards for the two of them in the near future - especially since his family adore Jordin.

"She was awesome. That was the time period when we really got close. Beforehand I wasn't really looking for a relationship. But she literally stopped everything she was doing and flew down to Miami and took care of me. It was amazing," he smiled.

When probed about his relationship with Jordan further, the singer was asked if his girlfriend gets on with his mother.

"She does! My mother is absolutely in love with her, and my grandmother even more. She is 91 and she tells me, 'My only wish before I die is to see you and Jordan get married,'" he added.

Jason confirmed that the rumours about their engagement are false, but admitted they will take the next step in their relationship when the "time is right."

The star also revealed that he hasn't been ring shopping just yet.

"If I'm looking then I'm going to buy," he said.

Jason is seen performing a headstand in his video for newest single The Other Side. The singer says completing the daring move so soon after breaking his neck was a defiant stand against his potentially fatal injury.

"I'm good now. It was a year total recovery, but now I'm back to 100 per cent," he said.

"I had to learn to sleep on my back. It was a nightmare. But now I sleep on my back, it's like second nature.

"I started doing those kind of movements after the injury. You know, I feel my injury happened for a reason - it was supposed to inspire somebody. So I wanted to see what was the total opposite, what would be a symbol of being undefeated and not let anything keep me down. And it was doing a headstand!" he smiled.
