Jennifer Lawrence's honesty delights boyfriend Darren Aronofsky

Darren Aronofsky was pleasantly surprised by Jennifer Lawrence's acting abilities on the set of his new film mother!

Jennifer Lawrence's greatest quality is her unfailing honesty, according to her filmmaker boyfriend Darren Aronofsky.

The Hollywood couple struck up a romance after Jennifer, 27, starred in the 48-year-old director's forthcoming psychological horror movie, mother!

Speaking to Britain's Daily Mail newspaper, Darren gushed over the actress and her honesty, a quality he believes has made her such a popular film star.

"She's one of the most honest people on the planet," he said. "That's possibly why people really enjoy her public persona, because it is who she is. There's no baloney going on. If she doesn't understand or agree with something, she just says it; and it's over with."

In mother! Jennifer stars as a pregnant housewife renovating her remote country home, whose life with her husband, played by Javier Bardem, is thrown into turmoil by a pair of mysterious lodgers.

Darren admitted that he wasn't sure that she would be suited to a role playing a vulnerable young woman, as the actress is best known for playing strong, heroic female characters like Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games.

"I don't think she's ever played a character who's so on the back foot," he explained. "She usually plays these strong, heroic women."

However his doubts vanished once they started working together as he felt the actress "tapped" into abilities he did not know she had.

The pair kept things professional during the mother! shoot, but began their romance shortly after wrapping filming.

In an interview with Vogue magazine, Jennifer compared her relationship with the director favourably to her past romances.

"I've been in relationships before where I am just confused. And I'm never confused with him," she said.

mother! will premiere at the Venice International Film Festival on 5 September (17).
