Joel Edgerton: I need me time
Joel Edgerton felt like "running away" when he experienced personal problems recently.
The 40-year-old actor is rumoured to have ended things with fiancée Alexis Blake last year. He might come across as a tough guy on screen but Joel, who stars in Ridley Scott's Exodus: Gods and Kings, suffers just like anybody else.
"When Ridley asked me to do Exodus, I was in a weird place where I was going through some things," he said to Britain’s Men's Health magazine, alluding to the breakup and a bereavement. "I was mentally and emotionally exhausted. I felt like I needed to run away.
"I'm a bit of a workaholic: I'm developing, I'm writing, I want to direct. I feel like I'm juggling balls and eventually they're all just going to drop... By the way, at this point in the interview it's going to sound like Joel's just going, 'Wah, wah, wah.' A-class problems. What a f**king whinging little b***h he is. But I'd like a personal life, a good connection with my family and friends. That suffers."
Now Joel is pleased he did accept the role of Rhamses in Exodus. It sees him appear alongside Hollywood star Christian Bale, who plays the part of Moses.
"I found him to be incredibly dedicated, but also very silly and a lot of fun to be around," he smiled of his co-star.
"When Christian got the part, one of the first things he did was re-watch Life of Brian to remind himself what can happen if you treat a movie like this too seriously. The more intense the movie, the more you need to defuse that with a bit of humour in between 'cut' and 'action'."
