John Mayer labels ex Taylor Swift's birthday 'lamest day of year'
John Mayer quickly deleted a tweet in which he labelled ex Taylor Swift's birthday the "lamest day of the year", but not before fans had taken a screenshot of it.
John Mayer has taken a thinly-veiled swipe at ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift, labelling her birthday the "lamest day of the year".
The 39-year-old singer posted on Twitter on Tuesday (13Dec16), as Taylor marked her 27th birthday. John quickly deleted the tweet, but not before fans managed to take a screenshot, with the message reading: "Tuesday, December 13 may be the lamest day of the year, conceptually."
Despite not mentioning Taylor by name, the tweet was taken by many to be a dig at Taylor.
John, who is over a decade older than the Bad Blood singer, dated Taylor between November 2009 and February 2010, when they split. Following their break-up, Taylor did what she does best and used the relationship breakdown to inspire her song Dear John.
He later said that the track, which appeared on Taylor's album Speak Now, made him "feel terrible".
"Because I didn't deserve it," he told Rolling Stone magazine. "I'm pretty good at taking accountability now, and I never did anything to deserve that. It was a really lousy thing for her to do."
Lyrics on the tune include: "Dear John, I see it all, now it was wrong / Don't you think 19 is too young to be played by your dark twisted games, when I loved you so?"
And as well as feeling "humiliated" by being name-checked in the song, John added to the magazine that he takes issue with it as a songwriter as well.
"I will say as a songwriter that I think it's kind of cheap songwriting," he continued. "I know she's the biggest thing in the world... but I think it's abusing your talent to rub your hands together and go, 'Wait till he gets a load of this!' That's bulls**t."
Taylor later told Glamour magazine that she didn't want to know what John had told Rolling Stone about her tune.
"I know it wasn't good, so I don't want to know," she said. "It's not that I'm this egomaniac and I don't want to hear anything negative... But I've never developed that thick a skin."
