Johnny Depp discusses ‘bumpy’ breakup
Johnny Depp admits his breakup from Vanessa Paradis was tough because children were involved.
The 50-year-old actor and the 40-year-old French actress called off their relationship in June 2012.
Speaking about the breakup for the first time, Johnny thinks it was especially difficult parting ways with his partner of 14 years because they have a family together.
"The last couple years have been a bit bumpy," he told Rolling Stone magazine. "At times, certainly unpleasant, but that's the nature of breakups, I guess, especially when there are kiddies involved."
The screen star has daughter Lily-Rose, 14, and son Jack, 11, with Vanessa.
He admitted that making their romance last while spending so much time apart was rough on them.
"Relationships are very difficult,” he confessed. “Especially in the racket that I'm in because you're constantly away or they're away and so it's hard. It wasn't easy on her. It wasn't easy on me. It wasn't easy on the kids. So, yeah.”
Johnny has dated Kate Moss and Winona Ryder in the past but claims his most recent split was different to anything else he has experienced.
He maintains that he has respect and love for the woman who gave birth to his children.
“The trajectory of that relationship - you play it out until it goes, one thing leads to another,” he shared. “So for whatever reason that ceases, it doesn't stop the fact that you care for that person, and they're the mother of your kids, and you'll always know each other, and you're always gonna be in each other's lives because of those kids. You might as well make the best of it."
Although in the past he may have used alcohol to get over heartbreak, this time he made smart decisions.
Johnny’s priority was ensuring his kids dealt with the change appropriately.
"In terms of the breakup, I definitely wasn't going to rely on the drink to ease things or cushion the blow or cushion the situation," he said. "'Cause that could have been fatal. I felt it was my duty to be real clear throughout that. I had something pretty serious to focus on, really, which was making sure that my kids were gonna be cool."
