Josh Brolin: I'm cool with embarrassment

Josh Brolin once ripped his pants while filming with Russell Crowe.
The 45-year-old actor has starred in a variety of roles, including Joe Doucett in Oldboy and Sgt. John O'Mara in Gangster Squad.
Over the years, Josh has realised it’s fine for him to make a fool out of himself at work.
“I now have a clear understanding that embarrassing myself in front of 100 crew members is OK in order to get what we need to make the best film we can make,” he reasoned to Total Film.
Josh starred in 2007’s Gangster Squad alongside Hollywood heavyweights Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington.
He recalled a particularly cringey moment while filming with director Ridley Scott.
“I had this idea of being narrower because I’m naturally a bigger guy. Being more speedy. So they made my wardrobe smaller,” he revealed.
“When I got on the set, I went right to work. I was rehearsing whatever scene I was doing first with Russell. He and I didn’t really speak. Ridley and I hadn’t spoken at all. I was hired without meeting him.
“We started rehearsing and then I sat down and the ass of my pants just split wide open. It’s one of those moments that now I would go, ‘Guys? Look at… [jumps up and bends over]. I think I’m going to have to change my pants!’ But I didn’t. I was nervous.”
The star can clearly remember what happened next.
He still hasn’t quite lived down what he experienced in that moment.
“I started sweating and my voice started shaking and my acting just got worse and worse and worse and worse and worse,” he laughed.
“Finally, Ridley – who was just so unimpressed – said, ‘Why don’t you go back and we’ll talk about the scene in a little bit.’
“I went back, I just laid on my bed in my trailer waiting for the knock to happen and get fired. There’s the knock. I open the door. Ridley’s standing there, ‘I want to talk to you.’ I said, ‘Sure.’ He said, ‘What were you doing, there’s so much more vulnerability than what’s in the script and I really, really like it – so let’s keep going in that direction.’ Which all came out of the shame of my ripped pants!”
