Josh Duhamel was shocked to realise that Julianne Hough is "more of a dude" than he is.

The Hollywood stars appear in the new movie Safe Haven, which sees Julianne play a beautiful young woman haunted by dark secrets from her past. As well as being an established actress, Julianne is also a professional ballroom dancer and appeared on US TV show Dancing with the Stars for several seasons. Josh expected his co-star to be delicate and ladylike, and was pleasantly surprised to be proven wrong.

"I expected Julianne Hough, the beautiful Julianne Hough, sparkly and beautiful and all those things. Dancer, performance background. I expected prim and proper," he told Access Hollywood. "I got a dude who is probably more of a dude than me. That was the biggest surprise. I guess [that was] the biggest, [most] pleasant surprise, because I was expecting sort of prim and proper, and I got just the opposite."

Julianne also revealed that she was surprised by Josh when they began working together.

"A sexy dork. You're a sexy dork," she replied when asked to describe her handsome co-star.

Julianne has been dating TV-and-radio host Ryan Seacrest since 2010, while Josh is happily married to Black Eyed Peas star Fergie.

Josh and Julianne were required to shoot some romantic scenes together for Safe Haven, and the 40-year-old actor has recalled speaking to Ryan to put his mind at ease before filming.

"I just thought it would be cool if he and I had a man to man about the scene before we started shooting it. I was like, 'Hey, just so you know, I totally respect you and your relationship. Nothing weird is going to happen, just so you know,'" he explained. "And [Ryan was] like, 'Yeah, I wasn't even thinking about it.' I walked away thinking, 'Why would I feel compelled to do that? You only made him think about it when you didn't even need to.'"
