Josh Hartnett: 'Everything matters now I'm a father'
Josh Hartnett has an entirely new perspective on life after becoming a father to a baby daughter with girlfriend Tamsin Egerton.
Josh Hartnett feels like he's "actually living life for the first time" after becoming a father.
The 37-year-old actor and girlfriend Tamsin Egerton welcomed a daughter, the first child for both, last year (15). The pair are doing their best to keep details about their baby private, but Josh opened up about fatherhood in an interview on television show Good Morning Britain on Tuesday (10May16).
"It changes everything," Josh said of becoming a father. "What can you say, it's where the rubber finally meets the road and everything you've done beforehand is a preamble and suddenly you're actually living your life for the first time. Because everything matters a bit more, doesn't it?"
Josh is most well known for his roles in movies such as Pearl Harbor and 40 Days and 40 Nights, as well as television show Penny Dreadful. But since his daughter made her grand entrance into the world, the actor has a new perspective about life and work.
"There's a lot less time for navel gazing (when you have a baby)," he admitted. "A lot of what you do in Hollywood is a lot of, I think for a lot of people, is trying to decipher what they want to do with their next job - how they want to be perceived.
"And I think at this point in my life it's more about if I enjoy something, if I like the people I might be potentially working with, I just want to take the opportunity because I know you want to live as much of a full life as you can when you're not taking care of your daughter so you can go back and give her that full experience in a happy self. As opposed to someone who is being constantly worried about how the world might perceive them - that's gone out the window."
Josh was on the show to promote the third season of Penny Dreadful, which is currently airing both in the U.K. and the U.S.
While his role as Ethan Chandler is very dark, Josh insists the cast have a lot of fun in between takes.
"There's a lot of Guinness in Ireland (where it's filmed) - we do have some occasionally!" he said. "It's a very dark show but we do try to have as much fun on the set as possible in order to combat that. We've been working together for three years now and all the actors get along really well and we have a lot of fun."
