Judy Greer: Older kids are hard

Judy Greer may not have to change diapers, but the problems she has to deal with are of an important nature.

The American actress married husband Dean E. Johnsen in 2011, and is stepmother to his teenage children.

While Judy concedes she doesn't have to deal with dirty diapers, she laughs that the issues she faces are of a life changing nature.

"My stepkids are so old now, I'm almost done. Except now it gets really expensive because they're going to college. People say; 'You have it so easy, your kids are older.' But the stuff I have to deal with now is so major - college, sex, grades and sports," Judy explained to British newspaper Metro.

"I'm like; 'I know your baby has a dirty [diaper] but we're about to write a really big cheque so enjoy your free school and your [diaper]-changing!'"

Judy's role as matriarch has stood her in good stead for her latest movie role.

The 38-year-old actress has transformed into primate Cornelia in the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, the wife of lead monkey Caesar, played by Andy Serkis.

"I love the Planet of the Apes franchise. My husband's such a big fan it was sort of: 'If you can't beat them, join them.' He's so happy I'm in the film," she smiled.

As part of her research, Judy was able to spend time with real chimps, and says there's a lot to learn from our fury friends.

"They seem to hear in a very pure way what people are trying to communicate to them. I liked the pureness. If I was Cornelia and my husband came into our bedroom late, I'd be like: 'Hey man, you're here now, that's cool.' There was no subtext. I thought: 'I need to remember that in real life,'" she said.
