Katherine Jenkins has become a mother for the first time after giving birth to a baby girl.

The 35-year-old Welsh singer said she and husband Andrew Levitas were "absolutely besotted" with their daughter Aaliyah, who was born in New York.

In a statement, she said: "Introducing our daughter Aaliyah Reign Levitas, who came loudly into the world weighing almost 7lbs and surrounded by love.

"We are absolutely besotted with her and grateful for the beautiful blessing of this happy, healthy, little miracle. Mummy is recovering well and Daddy couldn't be prouder of his two gorgeous princesses. Cwtches all round."

Jenkins married US filmmaker and artist Levitas at Hampton Court Palace in 2014 after a whirlwind romance.

The couple went public with their relationship when Levitas accompanied Jenkins to Buckingham Palace to collect her OBE in March 2014.

They announced their engagement after six months of dating.

Jenkins was previously engaged to TV presenter Gethin Jones and dated him for four years until splitting in 2011.

She had spoken about wanting to have children shortly after tying the knot: "Now I'm married, I do want kids ... I do really want a family," she said.

Congratulations have poured in from the star's friends and many fans.
