Keira Knightley: I'm not thick!

Keira Knightley and Benedict Cumberbatch "faked it" while filming The Imitation Game.

The 29-year-old takes on the part of brainy Joan Clarke in upcoming movie The Imitation Game, which follows the real-life story of mathematician Alan Turing, who broke top-secret codes during World War II.

Keira wanted to prepare for the part, but struggled with getting her head around the technical side of things.

"I did about three weeks of reading and two weeks were spent trying to understand what any of the theories were. I got other books and I didn't understand a f**king word. I don't think I'm the most intelligent person, but I'm not thick as sh*t. Still, I could not make head or tail of it," she laughed to "They even really sweetly got some lovely people in to give us talks and all of us sat there being actors going, 'Yeah, yeah,' making notes, like, 'Yeah, absolutely, absolutely.' And they'd leave and we'd be like [whispers], 'Did you understand any of that?' 'Not a word!' 'Okay fine, we'll fake it!' So we faked it."

She added that leading man Benedict Cumberbatch is "incredibly bright", but even he didn't understand some of the concepts.

When Keira isn't performing in front of the camera she enjoys kicking back and relaxing. The brunette beauty is married to musician James Righton, who also keeps busy with his band the Klaxons.

"You get periods where when you work and it's really intense, but then you go from that to nothing, so it's a very different lifestyle for that and great because it's equally extreme," she smiled. "Yeah I just switch off totally [while not working]; I don't have a problem with doing that. The problem is bringing it back on again... Staring out the window for days. Reading, cooking, walking... just sort of hanging out really."

One of Keira's most memorable roles to date is that of Elizabeth Swann in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, which saw her kiss Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp.

However, while former co-star Orlando recently revealed he's "open" to returning to the movies in upcoming instalment Dead Men Tell No Tales, Keira has confirmed she won't be back for the fifth film.
