Kerry Washington made mom cry

Kerry Washington

Kerry Washington turned to education to keep her ego intact while hunting for a breakthrough acting role.

The American actress struggled when originally trying to break into the industry.

While she has now made a name for herself in various projects, including her hit TV series Scandal and movie Django Unchained, Kerry relied on her education to boost her confidence when searching for an acting role.

Her mother was so overwhelmed at her career choice that she couldn't help but shed a tear of worry for her daughter.

"My mother literally cried when I told her I wanted to be an actor," Kerry told website Refinery29.com. "I always felt like my intellect was of much greater importance than my appearance, which I think has been a blessing for me. Because I am not stupid. I just always thought to myself, 'I'm just gonna be smart and funny instead of looking pretty.'"

Since finding fame, Kerry is amazed at all the perks that come with it. However, she was put off by the lack of privacy on Twitter and was keen to avoid the social networking site, which is used by millions of stars.

"My understanding of Twitter is that it was a bunch of famous people telling you when they're going to the bathroom!" she exclaimed. "And that was not something I wanted to be a part of."

Although she enjoys the limelight, Kerry insists she is sensible when it comes to making big decisions in life. When it comes to her personal life, she is more careful and doesn't listen to other people's opinions, instead choosing what's best for her.

"I have to be more conscious about my boundaries," she revealed. "And, the choices that I make, to keep my personal identity intact. My work belongs to everyone, because that's the choice I've made. But, my life belongs to me."
