Kidman's father 'killed in accident'
Nicole Kidman's father has reportedly died, following a fall.
The Australian actress' father, Dr Antony Kidman, is said to have died following a fall while visiting Nicole's sister Antonia and her family in Singapore.
Dr Kidman was a clinical psychologist at Sydney's Royal North Shore Hospital and held the position of director of health psychology at the University of Technology Sydney.
The Royal North Shore Hospital was not immediately commenting on Dr Kidman's death.
The Oscar-winning actress enjoyed a close relationship with her father, and has previously taken him to red carpet events with her. Nicole and husband Keith Urban were joined by Dr Kidman at the Swisse Celebrate Life Ball held in Melbourne in June.
Dr Kidman was given an Order of Australia medal in 2005 for his services to health and medicine. He worked extensively in the fields of breast cancer research, clinical psychology and the psychological impact of living with cancer.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Janelle Kidman.
Dr Kidman was also a regular speaker on radio and television, and a contributor to The Australian Women's Weekly.
In one of his last public statements, titled Forget happiness, search for meaning, Dr Kidman wrote about striving for achievable goals in life.
"Humans are very good at denigrating themselves and their self-worth," he wrote. "For example, I should be successful and I must be attractive. There is nothing wrong with preferring and working hard to achieve these objectives but when you demand that they happen, then you are in for a difficult time. A crucial strategy used in therapy is to get people to accept themselves and others unconditionally.
"People who achieve contentment are liked. They are good role models, are normally empathetic and are sought after as friends. These attributes give meaning to their lives; they help other people and achieve contentment with the cards they have been dealt.”
