Kristen Bell’s ‘calculated’ proposal

Kristen Bell wanted the media to pick up on her proposal to Dax Shepard.

The blonde actress popped the question to her long-time partner in June despite being engaged for four years. They had waited for California to legalize gay marriage before they tied the knot themselves.

On the day the law was changed Kristen decided to extend the offer of marriage again and made sure the proposal was one Dax couldn't refuse.

"The morning that it was passed, in June, we weren't at home together. I got up about 5am and was watching the ruling," she recalled to British newspaper The Metro.

"I very calculatingly proposed to him on Twitter a few minutes later, as I knew it would get picked up by the media. It would have been embarrassing if he'd said no."

The couple's wedding was just as relaxed as their engagement, with a small ceremony at the Beverly Hills County Clerk Office. Controversially Dax chose his wife's wedding ensemble rather than her hiding a dress from him. Instead of spending money on a lavish party the couple decided to secure a future for themselves and their baby daughter Lincoln.

"He actually picked out my wedding outfit - a black ALC jumpsuit. I was planning on going casual but he wanted us to dress up - he wore an adorable tuxedo," she smiled.

"If my friends and family want a party, they can throw one. People have lost their minds when it comes to weddings these days. There is something very romantic about solidifying your relationship and I don't fault any girl who wants her 'big day'.

"But, personally, I find it a lot more romantic to make the rest of your life a celebration and put a down-payment on a house."
