Lea Michele can't wait to work with singer Adam Lambert on musical TV show Glee.

It has been announced the singer will feature on the upcoming fifth season of the musical show about a group of talented high school kids.

Glee star Lea is keen to have the American Idol runner-up on board.

"Omg so excited that @adamlambert is going to be on #Glee this season! I hope he's with me in NYC! #GleeSeason5 (sic)" she posted on Twitter.

The show's creator, Ryan Murphy, was the one to break the good news yesterday.

He let fans in on the development by tweeting about Adam's involvement.

"I am thrilled to announce that the super talented Adam Lambert is joining the cast of Glee this fall (sic)," he posted.

The singer responded: "I'm so excited!! ;) (sic)"

It's not yet known which character Adam will be playing or how many episodes he will appear in.

The 31-year-old becomes the latest American Idol star to feature on Glee after runner-up of the 11th series, Jessica Sanchez, enjoyed a multiple-episode role on the show.

Adam has previously called Glee "cute" and praised it for showing what it's like to be an arts kid at school.

"Glee is really irresistible - it's charming," he told The Hollywood Reporter.

He also added he'd ideally like to play himself on the show.

In the past, Adam played himself and sang on ABC Family show Pretty Little Liars.

The fifth season of Glee is scheduled to premiere in September.
