Lee and Denise compete for award

Lee Mead and Denise van Outen will battle it out for the gong

Husband and wife Lee Mead and Denise Van Outen will go head to head in a battle for theatrical honours after they were both nominated in the same category at an awards event.

The nominations for the 11th annual Whatsonstage.com awards were announced today (Friday) at the Cafe de Paris in central London.

Sheridan Smith, best known for her role in the BBC sitcom Two Pints Of Lager And A Packet Of Crisps, was nominated for the Best Actress in a Musical award for her role in the musical Legally Blonde - one of seven nominations for the show.

She faces competition from former EastEnder Tamzin Outhwaite who was recognised for her role in Sweet Charity.

The Best Actor in a Play category could see more success for Rory Kinnear who has already picked up an Evening Standard award for his roles in Measure For Measure and Hamlet.

Also nominated are David Suchet, Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch, Matthew Macfadyen, Simon Russell Beale and Toby Stephens.

Sex And The City's Kim Cattrall is nominated for the Best Actress in a Play prize along with Zoe Wanamaker, Helen McCrory, Jenny Jules, Nancy Carroll and Tracie Bennett.

Lee and Denise were nominated for Best Takeover in a Role for their appearances in Wicked and Legally Blonde respectively.

Voting opens today and the winners will be announced on February 20 at an event at the Prince of Wales Theatre in London.
