Lena Dunham: 'My Basic Instinct moment even shocked me!'
Lena Dunham is "so excited" about turning 30 next month (May16), because it means she can start over with a clean slate.
Lena Dunham needed an extra light for her vagina when they shot a Basic Instinct style scene on her hit show Girls.
The 29-year-old star plays Hannah Horvath in the hit U.S. TV show, and the character rarely goes a week without stripping off in some capacity. Fans of the series were shocked this week (beg04Apr16) though when Hannah, who is currently working as a teacher, uncrossed her legs while wearing a skirt and no underwear during a scolding from her principal.
During an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers on Wednesday (06Apr16), Lena admitted she was "shocked" when the idea of the scene, reminiscent of Sharon Stone's move in 1992 movie Basic Instinct, was pitched in the writers' room.
"But 10 minutes later it was in the script," Lena explained. "Then five months later I was sitting there on the set listening to the director say they needed to add an extra key light because they couldn’t see quite clearly enough. I had to have an extra light for my vagina!"
Lena added she feels like she didn't "go all the way" because viewers didn't get to see "what's inside". She also revealed that people often mistake her for Hannah in real life, but they couldn't be more different.
"People keep asking me if I think Hannah made a smart choice. They think because I play her and because I did it, I endorse this behaviour," she giggled. "Obviously you should never spread your underpantless legs for your employer - that is called sexual harassment. But I can play it without endorsing it. I get it but I think people are surprised because I’m a bit more conservative than that in my personal life."
Lena has enjoyed huge success despite her relative youth, after first making a name for herself when she created HBO's Girls, which debuted in 2012. She will be turning 30 next month (May16) and said to Seth she's looking forward to kicking things off with a clean slate when she reaches the landmark birthday.
"I’m so excited (about turning 30). My boyfriend is 32, he seems to really be enjoying it," she said. "My thing is this, I’d be willing to turn 30 just so people stop telling me how much better it is to be 30. But I also feel there is some essential confidence.
"There’s something about your twenties where it’s a little hard to be taken seriously, people assume you’re going to make a mess of things, maybe you have made a mess of things, so I just feel like 30 is going to be a real clean slate for me and I’m thrilled."
