Leonardo sought Isla advice

Leonardo DiCaprio

Isla Fisher has recalled trying to introduce Leonardo DiCaprio to Vegemite while they were filming The Great Gatsby in Australia.

The stars both appear in the new Baz Luhrmann-directed movie, which was filmed in Isla’s home country. The red-haired actress loved sharing her knowledge about Sydney with her co-stars. Isla even tried to encourage Leonardo to sample an Australian savoury yeast spread, but admits she wasn’t too successful.

“He did ask me where he should live in Sydney and he wanted loads of advice. I did feel quite proud explaining to him where Bondi Beach was and I tried to introduce him to Vegemite. It’s so yummy, but no one seems to like it if they aren’t from Australia. Why is that?!” Isla laughed as she spoke to UK TV show Lorraine at the Cannes Film Festival.

Leonardo plays Jay Gatsby in the lavish movie, which is set during the ‘20s. The character is known for his love of money and throwing glitzy parties, but little is known about his background or private life. Despite having a reputation for living it up with his celebrity pals, Leonardo insists he has little in common with Jay.

“I have been to some parties in my life and I have been to some premieres, but no, thank god, that is not my everyday life, 24 hours a day,” he said with a twinkle in his eye.

The Great Gatsby opened the prestigious French event yesterday and the cast all shone on the red carpet premiere despite the heavy rain.

Carey Mulligan plays Daisy Buchanan in the movie, based on the iconic novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald. She was thrilled to land the elegant role and has recalled how she struggled to stay serious on set while dripping in expensive jewels.

“Daisy’s role is to look beautiful and wonderful and well turned out at all times. And I think, that is part of the Kardashian empire,” she smiled. “Yes, the diamonds are all real. There was a man who used to follow me around to make sure I didn’t run off with them. He would stand in the corner of the room. I kept on making gags, I would pull a ring off and pretend to drop it down my top and he would just stare at me!”
