Leto: I needed to go away

Jared Leto auditioned for latest film role after a six year break from acting, and impressed over Skype.

The 42-year-old recently returned to the big screen in Dallas Buyers Club, where he plays a transgender woman battling HIV called Rayon.

The actor believes that focusing on his music has made him a better actor.

"I think I needed to go away in order to have something to say again," he said to Variety magazine.

"I have largely made independent films, small films, and these movies can break your heart. You're not just putting your work into them, you're pouring your heart and soul. And when they don't meet expectations, it can break your heart and your spirit."

But after reading the script for Dallas Buyers Club, which also stars Matthew McConaughey, Jared knew it was the role for him.

He decided to step away from the microphone and see if the part would reignite his passion for films.

"I said to myself, 'Let's go make this film and see if there's anything left in there for me. Is it going to be another experience that falls short? Am I going to have my heart broken again?' It's kind of like a relationship: Let me see if I can love again," he recalled.

During the interview Jared recalled the Skype audition he had for Rayon with the film's director Jean-Marc Vallée.

Jared was on tour in Berlin with his band 30 Seconds to Mars at the time but went all out to impress Jean-Marc by auditioning in character.

"I remember connecting, and reaching out to pick up some lipstick. I put it on and I could kind of see his jaw drop," Jared said. "I undid this big winter jacket and had a pink furry sweater on and pulled it down over my shoulder."
