Lily James: I had a Cinderella shrine

Lily James thought about what Cinderella had for breakfast to help her prepare to portray the character.

The 25-year-old actress is starring as the fairytale character in an upcoming live active retelling of the story, also starring Richard Madden, Cate Blanchett and Helena Bonham Carter.

It's directed by Kenneth Branagh, who was strict with Lily about how she should approach filming.

"Ken wanted a backstory so he talked to me about things like, 'What does she have for breakfast? Does she sleep with the blinds open or closed?'" she told British magazine Hello! "My wall at home was covered in pictures and paintings and quotes that made me think of her so I woke up in the morning and saw her. I'd get really embarrassed when friends came around and saw my shrine to Cinderella."

The tale obviously centres on the love story between Cinderella and Prince Charming, played by Richard.

In real life Lily isn't sure people can fall for each other as soon as they lay eyes on one another, but that doesn't mean she isn't romantic.

"I have lots of different ideas about love, about how it can work, and I do believe in love at first sight. Although maybe it's afterwards you think, 'Wow, that was something that just happened.' I don't think I've necessarily gone, 'Oh my God, I'm in love with you.' And it hasn't worked if I have," she laughed.

The actress is dating British star Matt Smith and they couldn't be happier. She's revealed what she looks for when it comes to romance.

"I believe in a soulmate but I believe there's not only one. For me, Prince Charming is a funny person, someone who can make you laugh," she said.
