Kate Bosworth describes her younger self as "socially inept".
The blonde actress has starred in hit films including Win a Date with Tad Hamilton! and Big Sur.
Reminiscing about her childhood, Kate admits she struggled to come out of her shell when younger. She credits her acting career for boosting her confidence and self-belief.
"I didn't have many friends in school. I spent most of my time by myself reading or riding horses and no one would have thought I was the type of girl who would ever become an actress. I was socially inept and very much a loner," she recalled to British magazine Look.
"[Acting] helped draw me out of my social awkwardness, but it took some time. You have to throw yourself into your emotions and explore that space inside you where you've always been afraid to go. I've matured a lot in the last few years and now I think I can better harness the vulnerability and sensitive that in the past used to trouble me."
Kate's latest role is as a drug addict in drama Homefront. She stars alongside Hollywood heartthrobs James Franco and Jason Statham, who she thoroughly enjoyed working with.
"James and I didn't know each other before we made this film so we felt like we were both throwing ourselves off a cliff as a way of getting into our characters' relationship," she laughed.
"And Jason is such a sweetheart, so talented, and such a joy to be around. He lights up a room, and whenever he comes on the set he has such a great energy. It's also amazing to see him to action scenes. I've never seen an actor perform stunts at that high level [while] acting."
