Loved ones gather for intimate Prince memorial service

Published 24/04/2016

Prince has reportedly been cremated.

Prince's loved ones gathered together at his Paisley Park estate on Saturday (23Apr16) to honour his memory during a private memorial service.

The legendary Purple Rain musician passed away on Thursday (21Apr16) at the age of 57 at his Paisley Park home, which is located in Chanhassen, Minnesota.

And on Saturday afternoon the star's closest friends and relatives, such as ex-fiancee Sheila E, bass player Larry Graham and his ex-wife Mayte Garcia, arrived to the memorial service to pay their respects to the music icon.

The event was decorated to reflect some of Prince's finest achievements as well as his aesthetic tastes - floral arrangements featured purple flowers and his mysterious 'Love Symbol' emblem was displayed throughout the affair. Also, instead of wearing traditionally black funerary attire, many people turned up in purple suits and dresses.

Although only close loved ones were allowed onto the property, hundreds of fans also gathered outside of the gates to commemorate the late great musician. Listeners honoured the beloved R&B legend by lining the fences surrounding the Paisley Park estate with countless purple balloons, pictures, flowers and other sweet gifts.

Prince's sister, Tyka Nelson, came outside of the gates on Saturday to visit with his fans at one point, gifting them with large round, purple boxes filled with memorabilia.

The Diamonds and Pearls singer's demise has come as a shock to many, including Deborah UpChurch, who saw him perform at the Dakota Jazz Club in Minneapolis just days before he passed away.

"He didn't seem ill," she told People magazine. "He walked with the same pace that he normally struts. He has kind of a cadence and a tenor about himself. He looked healthy. He looked like Prince. Like a gentleman in a nightclub."

Prince's cause of death remains a mystery, as although his body underwent an autopsy on Friday (22Apr16), authorities are still waiting for toxicology tests before making a final decision. However, Carver Country Sheriff Jim Olson informed reporters after the autopsy was performed that there were no signs of trauma on the body and also no indications Prince committed suicide. ET Online reports Prince was cremated after authorities released his remains to family members following the autopsy.
