Lupita’s ‘musical past life’

Lupita Nyong’o doesn’t think acting was her forté in a past life.

The 12 Years a Slave actress won an Academy Award earlier this year for her performance in the Steve McQueen drama about the pre-Civil War United States.

But in a new interview, the 31-year-old Hollywood darling revealed how music was her first love in a past life.

“I wish I had time to learn how to play an instrument,” Lupita told the US edition of Marie Claire. “I feel like I was a musician in a past life. I’d really like to get back to that life but I don’t have the patience or the time to do it!”

Lupita is one of five young actresses to get their own cover for the May Hollywood Fresh Faces issue of the magazine. Also featured are Elizabeth Olsen, Kate Mara, Emilia Clarke and Elle Fanning. Each starlet took the opportunity to discuss their rapid rise to stardom, and with an Oscar to her name, Lupita had more to share than most.

“I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy,” she said of waiting for her category to be announced at awards shows. “It’s not even about the outcome; it’s about the agony of the unknown. It’s like waiting for test results in a hospital.”

The Non-Stop actress is keen to get back to work. But she admitted she isn’t busting a gut to try and surpass her Best Supporting Actress gong.

“I am not in the business of trying to top this year - that's virtually impossible. I'd have to be pronounced the Queen of England or something!” she laughed.
