London-based reality TV series Made in Chelsea has welcomed its first black star, Akin Solanke-Caulker.

Made in Chelsea has finally signed up its first ever black castmember, east London born Akin Solanke-Caulker.

Five years after making its debut, Londoner Akin will join Jamie Laing and Louise Thompson on the E4 reality show.

A school friend of castmember Alex Mytton, Akin will be the first black character to become a member of the cast which is set in the diverse capital. An addition he agrees is long overdue.

“It’s definitely overdue, they need a black person on the show; my mum keeps saying I’m representing," Akin told The Sun newspaper in an interview.

“I’m not just representing myself but I’m representing other people that look like me, not just the racial side of things but also people who are from where I am from.”

Akin is a regular on the West End party scene. He grew up in east London before moving to Parsons Green, near Chelsea. The party playboy admits he's not an heir to a fortune like former MIC star Millie Mackintosh, and added he's more likely to be compared to “Carlton from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.”

The show is undergoing a revamp after suffering the loss of love rat Spencer Matthews. Show originals Francis Boulle and Fredrik Ferrier are rejoining the cast along with Oliver Proudlock and Akin reckons he’s up for the challenge of picking up where Spencer left off.

“I’m quite similar to Spencer in that it’s not hard for me to vocalise what I’m feeling. I am definitely a playboy but I’ll try not to be on screen for the sake of my family," he explained. “I’ve been single for the last eight years but I’m not a complete savage."

And when asked which of the Chelsea ladies he has his eye on, he smiled: “The closest to my target is probably Louise Thompson, she’s quite captivating but she has a boyfriend now anyway.”

A spokeswoman for the show said: “Made in Chelsea follows the relationships of a genuine group of friends and we are delighted that Akin, who is a close school friend of Alex, has joined the show.”
