Maisie: My nan watches Game of Thrones

Maisie Williams has revealed the first time she watched Game of Thrones she was sitting with her parents and grandmother – and says the experience was “beyond awful”.

The 17-year-old actress stars as Arya Stark in the hit US TV show, which is famous for the raunchy sex and violent scenes.

And Maisie admitted during an interview on Alan Carr’s Chatty Man that she was left distressed after sitting down to watch the first episode alongside her relatives.

“When the show was aired my mum let me sit down and watch it, which was very embarrassing for me because I was there with my mum, my stepdad, my nan, my cousins, my aunt and uncle, my cousin’s dog… because everyone was like, ‘Maisie’s on the telly!’ ” she said.

“And then we sat down and I was like, ‘This is awful. This is beyond awful’. And my mum used to top my nan up with a bit more gin every time there was a pair of boobs on screen.”

When she first auditioned for the role of Arya, Maisie’s mother was not entirely aware of the adult content of the programme.

However, Maisie says she has to just continually remind herself the storylines are just that – fictional.

“On my final audition the writers came up and said to my mum, ‘Have you read the book that this is based on?’ ” she said. “And my mum was halfway through and she kind of got the gist of where it was going and knew there was a lot of sex and violence and stuff. But it’s all pretend. No one really slept with their brother, and no one’s head really got cut off.”
