Marilyn Manson: I'm a shy guy
Marilyn Manson finds it difficult to be properly intimate with people.
The 46-year-old Goth rocker is currently dating American photographer Lindsay Usich. He was previously married to Dita Von Teese and has dated stars including Evan Rachel Wood and Rose McGowan but despite being a hit with women, the star insists he is nervous.
"I'm just really shy, despite what you'd imagine," he told Rolling Stone, after revealing he only makes love with the lights off. The star then added he always has his underwear around his ankles while in the throes of passion. "I have a phobia that the house is going to catch fire, and I don't want to be naked."
He later added: "I don't really like being intimate with people. I think maybe twice in my life have I taken a shower with a girl, and that was in the dark. I'm just really shy. I also have a great fear of bathtubs, maybe because my mother used to bathe me as a child and I have fractured memories of just not enjoying it."
While his romantic relationships might be fraught, Marilyn doesn't have the same problems with his friendships.
One of his closest pals is Hollywood star Johnny Depp, and the pair share matching tattoos on their wrists and backs.
"Johnny's one of the only people I can talk to. I can't explain it other than we don't ever have to say anything, but we can't really say it to anyone else, either," he said.
"We mumble like we're a mumbling chorus, and we finish sentences with hand gestures."
They are both into music too - Johnny has even joined Marilyn on stage in the past. Plus they share other things; they tried to buy the gun Hitler used to commit suicide at one point and both have to have the TV on to fall asleep.
"We like to consider ourselves 12th-graders, the guys with more experience than the ninth-graders, the ones that the girls want to f**k. I mean, time and age are really irrelevant to me. Johnny is the same way. Sometimes, I think I'm trapped in the age that I started this. I'm trapped at 23," he said.
In the wide-reaching interview, Marilyn also touches on his public persona. He's been called a Satanist in the past and was blamed for a spate of high school shootings in the US. He prefers to see himself as "the third act of every movie you've ever seen" - meaning the part where the action really kicks off.
The star also spoke about his childhood, which was difficult. Although he didn't go into in great detail and has rarely spoken about it, his late mother Barbara suffered from Munchausen by Proxy syndrome, which causes people to induce or exaggerate symptoms of illness in children. It is likely the reason why Marilyn spent a lot of time in hospital as a child and had allergies, with the star explaining he isn't reactive to eggs and fabric softener, as used to be thought.
"I didn't find out about the Munchausen until later in life, and I'm not sure how far back she had it," he explained. "What I can say is that mental illness runs in the family."
