(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Actress Marion Cotillard suffered her first panic attack on the Macbeth set because it was so "tough".
The Oscar winner stars as Lady Macbeth in the latest cinematic version of Shakespeare's tragedy. With Michael Fassbender in the lead, it tells the classic story of Macbeth, a duke of Scotland, who receives a prophecy from three witches, telling him he will become king. Obsessed with the idea, he ends up murdering the king.
Now Marion has revealed the shoot was so traumatic, she suffered a panic attack.
“I never had panic attacks before," she revealed to the winter issue of Porter magazine.
"What was funny is I didn’t know what a panic attack was, but I had studied it for (a) role I did before... I was like, ‘Are you kidding me?’... I just had to accept I would freak out the whole shoot long.”
She went on describe the Macbeth experience as "tough", "gloom" and "total darkness."
Director Justin Kurzel isn't the first director to take on the project, with Sam Worthington starring in an Australian adaptation by Geoffrey Wright in 2006. The oldest is a silent movie dating back to 1908.
While Marion is hardly a newcomer to film, she admits that playing Lady Macbeth is one of the hardest things she's ever had to do.
"It was a hell of a thing to take on," she previously admitted to Britain's Telegraph newspaper. "I have been through very deep experiences with many dramatic roles but this one was the darkest of them all. All the roles I’ve experienced have had some light in them. But here there was no light. Lady Macbeth is… She is a piece of work."
Macbeth hits cinemas worldwide from next month (October15).
