Matthew McConaughey loves seasonal storytelling

Oscar-winning star Matthew McConaughey still tops his Christmas tree with an angel decoration he made as a child.

Actor Matthew McConaughey can’t wait to sit down and tell stories with his family at Christmas.

The Oscar-winning star insists loved ones comes first around the season of goodwill, so he clears his schedule to spend as much time as possible with his wife Camila Alves, their three children and extended family. Matthew always looks forward to reliving past memories and sharing funny tales with those around him. A homemade decoration also holds a special place in his heart at this time of year.

“Getting the family together and all the grandkids and the kids,” he told Britain’s Hello! magazine when asked what his favourite thing about Christmas is. “We stay at home and tell stories – some of the same old stories are always told. That’s always been the most important tradition, to have my family together.

“And there’s an angel that I made when I was six that my mom passed down to me as soon as I got my own family and we started having some Christmases at our place. That’s the one we use on our Christmas tree.”

As a child, the 46-year-old Hollywood star was always an early bird around the holiday period. Matthew simply couldn’t wait to unwrap the gifts left for him by Santa – and now he has kids himself, he still doesn’t get a lie in on Christmas Day.

“Growing up, I was up before the sun rose at Christmas – you can’t sleep, you can’t wait to see if Santa came,” he smiled. “Now, as a parent, you’re up late on the 24th because you’ve got to do the Santa things after the kids have gone down. It’s hard to get them to go to sleep.

“I like staying up really late and then coming out the next morning and the kids are like: ‘How did Santa do that?’ One thing we’ve learnt in our family is that there’s such a thing as too many gifts, because if they get 20, they don’t remember the first 18 by that afternoon. They remember the last one. We try and spread the gifts out.”
