Matthew Morrison recalls engagement heartache
Matthew Morrison says breaking off his engagement in his 20s was one of the worst experiences he has ever been through.
When he was 27, the star proposed to his long-term girlfriend. Although he was in love, the actor wasn't ready to settle down and only popped the question because he felt pressure from society to do so.
The 34-year-old star quickly realised his error and was honest about it, although it killed the relationship.
"My instant thought at that moment was, 'What did you just do?' We talked and decided to break off the engagement, but then it was like, 'Well, what now? Do you still want to be my girlfriend?' It was messed up," he told British magazine Cosmopolitan. "Of course, it didn't work after that. It turned out to be one of the biggest growing experiences I've had as a man. I'd made this massive decision; I'd promised this girl a life together and I couldn't follow through. It was awful - all I could do was hold my hands up and be like, 'I'm the a**hole.'"
Matthew believes many people make the same mistake as him but feel too guilty to own up. He is proud that he made the tough decision to be true to himself as he didn't want to realise he was unhappy when he was in his 50s and already had children.
The star is now dating singer/songwriter Renee Puente, who he's been with for two years. He isn't ready to wed yet but believe she is his soul mate.
"The older you get, the more secure you are with yourself. You have to really know yourself before you can truly love someone," he explained. "I've got to experience many relationships and you get to know what you like and tolerate. I've had my heart broken and it turned me off relationships and trusting women for a long time, but you always overcome it."
