Matthew Perry caught out by M. Night Shyamalan lookalike
The former Friends star is more careful about who he hangs out with these days.
Matthew Perry knew he needed to curb his drinking when he spent a night with an Indian he mistook for moviemaker M. Night Shyamalan.
The former Friends star befriended the director backstage at the People's Choice Awards years ago when Shyamalan was basking in the glory of his hit film The Sixth Sense, and he was stoked when the filmmaker joined him for drinks six months later at the Sunset Marquis in Hollywood.
"He walked right up to me and said, 'Matthew, hi...'," Perry told U.S. TV host Ellen DeGeneres. "For about an hour and a half, my friends were there with M. Night Shyamalan... Eventually my friends filter out and they leave and it's just me and M. Night Shyamalan.
"I start to notice he, like, really likes me. Like every joke I say he's falling over himself. I'm like, 'M. Night Shyamalan loves me; this is the greatest night of my life."
His Indian guest then invited Perry to a nearby club and the actor jumped at the chance to spend more time with his new pal. And then he even suggested they should work together.
"I did this idiot actor thing... that never works...," he said, "but I was convinced that this night was going to be a life-changing night for me and I was gonna become a gigantic movie star as a result of this night. Like M. Night Shyamalan was gonna make a next movie and the trick ending is gonna be me."
Perry's pal dashed off to the restroom and another friend came over to find out who the actor was with. At that point Matthew suddenly realised he had been hanging out with a random dude.
"It was just an Indian gentleman who happens to look a lot like M. Night Shyamalan."
