Melissa McCarthy has let slip that Susan Sarandon and David Bowie used to date each other.

The Bridesmaids star was presenting an award to her friend Susan, whose granddaughter she plays in the upcoming film Tammy, when she exposed the 30-year-old secret.

According to the Daily Mail, Melissa was handing over a gong to Susan at the AARP's Annual Movies for Grownups Awards Gala in Beverly Hills when she introduced her by saying: " Susan is so cool - I mean she dated David Bowie."

The bombshell apparently came as news to the rest of the celebrity audience and Susan's two sons, although Melissa is said not to have realised that it was a secret.

Susan and David, both 67, worked together on vampire film The Hunger in 1983 and had a brief relationship at the time.

She married Tim Robbins five years later, who she was with for 21 years and had two sons with, while David married supermodel Iman in 1992.
