Mel C proud of powerful females in music

Mel C thinks it's "interesting" there are so many females in the music industry right now.

The Spice Girls singer rose to fame alongside Victoria Beckham, Emma Bunton, Mel B and Geri Halliwell.

The group coined the term "girl power" and paved the way for many of music's successful females.

"What's really interesting about the industry at the moment is that most of the biggest acts are women - Beyoncé, Rihanna, Adele, Pink, Jessie J - and that's probably the first time it's happened," she mused to the British edition of OK! magazine.

"Of course there are boys too but there seems to be a lot of very powerful women with the industry who are artists. I think behind the scenes it's still very male dominated."

The Spice Girls hit the music scene in the '90s, causing a stir with their strong attitudes and catchy tracks such as smash hit Wannabe.

Mel doesn't refer to herself as a feminist, but believes strongly in women proving themselves in the industry.

"I don't like to pigeonhole myself as being anything, but when we came out it was all boy bands and we came up against a lot of difficulties because record companies, magazines and even TV shows were saying girl bands don't work, they won't sell, and that's where girl power came from," she explained.

"We thought, 'F**k this, we'll show you and we'll do it better than the boys' - and we did. It was an interesting time, women were having more of a voice. Feminism has been around forever, but there was something bubbling in the '90s - it was a really positive time."
